The canted shot or as I’ve heard it called the “Dutch tilt”, is actually one of my favorite camera angles because of its power to arouse unsettling feelings and feelings of confusion or disorientation. The more I notice the method being used the more I become aware of my almost immediate response of discomfort or suspense. it’s a camera angle I recognize less in animated media but is very blatant to me in film. That being said, although I generally notice it, I haven’t experienced the canted shot being so jarringly angled that I am removed from the story or become disengaged. It’s interesting how shot angles and styles can dictate to an audience how they are supposed to feel about a situation even if it’s confusion.
Macro shots are unique for their use of highly detailed focus and almost create a separation between what the audience knows the object to be and how the object visually behaves being framed and focused in the extreme way that it is. Macro shots become more abstract in their consideration by an audience and are very rarely supposed to be taken literally for what is shown. This definitely reminds me of more montage approaches to film and would seem to be a helpful device in creating montage.

A girl and what looks like her sibling and parents sit on the couches of a living room. The parents and sister appear to be staring down at their phones. The girl looks around and sighs in boredom. The girl grabs her bag and her safari hat and exit the living room. The girl faces a sliding door and stands in front of it for a brief moment. She unslides the door and runs out in the open back yard with enthusiasm. Establishing shot of her standing in front of the garden. As she takes it all in the garden transforms into an imaginative safari space. She looks around in awe as trees and plants grow. In the distance a group of giant ladybugs fly in her direction and overhead. The girl takes a moment to watch them passing by. She then reaches into her bag and pulls out and reveals a map. She smiles at confirming the goal of her adventure. As she blindly walks reading her map, an evil plant creature notices her approaching. She notices when it’s almost to late and jumps out of danger when it tries to attack her. She then stumbles forward and lands face down in the dirt. As she lifts her head she notices a glimmering light behind the plants in front of her. She opens the plants to reveal a shining flower. She plucks the flower and places it inside her bag. Fade to her standing in front of the screen door. Cut to close up of her hands placing the flower in a jar with water. Cut to girl holding up jar with plant to her unaware sister still on the couch on her phone. The sister takes notice and smiles and receives the flower. End on a closeup of the flower in their hands and it becoming alert and glimmering again.
