Transitions are something I feel I struggle more with conceptualizing when approaching my own work as well as coming up with a variety of transitions. I’m glad to have read this section because Inow feel like I have a lot more options on creating more visually smooth and seamless transitioning. I can also see how transitions tie information together in a way that creates meaning almost instantly for viewers while being able to encapsulate heavy amounts of information in a short time span. Using Audio bridge as a method of transitioning scenes is not something I previously considered especially when it comes to depicting a large passing of time. This was exemplified in Citizen Kane when over the course of a sentence being said, a cut between a younger version of a character and an older version of a character takes place. It also creates an immediate audible relationship between what a shot is transitioning to while the audio from the previous scene continues and adds a seamless feel and affect.
Looking at Citizen Kane again I especially appreciate the use of visual match cut. In this example a closeup of words in a letter are matched cut and faded into Kane on a sled as a child. It seems simplistic but it’s something powerful to have such clear connections be made between scenes so that there is no confusion on what the next shot depicts. From this scene a time and name of the person in the following shot can be gathered quickly and becomes a technique of showing the audience an obvious look into the past.
Matching audio segue has to be he transition in the least familiar with or pay attention to. I know it definitely affects my experience of a transition but I’ve found that my attention to audio elements is less heightened than my attention to visual elements in general. Looking at he audio transition in Sorry, Wrong Number I was able to understand the matching of screams that fade out into train noises. Even without the visuals, inferences can be made from hearing this kind of transition. This transition to me represents a sound being overpowered by another and that can be jarring and easy subconsciously tap into.
